Argon is a chemical element designated by the symbol Ar. It has the atomic number 18 and is the most common and most utilized of the "noble gases", making up 0.94% of the Earth's atmosphere.

Argon is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic in both liquid and gaseous forms. Like other noble gases (helium, krypton, neon, xenon, radon), Argon is very stable, is mostly chemically inert and rarely reacts at room temperature.

Applications include high performance thermal isolation, isolation of liquid metal from the atmosphere in metallurgy, as a replacement for Nitrogen in the Food and Beverage industry, air bags in automobiles, shielding in arc welding, and the filling in incandescent light bulbs.
